Admission Procedure

FRESHMEN ADMISSIONS
Lincoln Park is a neighborhood high school with magnet programs. Approximately three-fourths of the students enroll in the school through one of the three magnet programs: the International Baccalaureate Program, Double Honors/Advanced Placement Program (HH/AP) and Performing Arts Program (Drama, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music). Students who live within the neighborhood attendance boundaries (see below) have automatic right of admittance to the school. If qualified they are automatically programmed into the HH/AP  Program. However, students from the attendance area who are interested in the International Baccalaureate Program or the Performing Arts Magnet Program must submit an application.

NOTE: Lincoln Park has its own application forms for the magnet programs. We do not use the magnet program application found in the CPS High School Directory book or posted on the CPS website. LPHS applications for either the IB program or the HH/AP Program and Performing Arts Program may be downloaded from our website or obtained through the elementary school 8th grade counselor or picked up in the main office at Lincoln Park beginning October 1, 2010.

MAGNET PROGRAMS
  • International Baccalaureate Program
    • A four-year accelerated and comprehensive international curriculum with close articulation between subjects and year levels and an emphasis on problem solving and integration of knowledge. The IB Diploma Program requires students to take and be examined in six subject groups they have studied over four years: Language A (literature written or translated into English), Language B (a second language), Social Sciences, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Arts and Electives.
    • In addition students take a two-year inter-disciplinary course (Theory of Knowledge), write an independent research Extended Essay of 4,000 words, and participate in creative, action, and service (CAS) activities. LPHS has the oldest IB program in Chicago and one of the most successful in the world. Over the past twenty years, there have been more National Merit Semi-Finalists from Lincoln Park's IB Program than from all of the rest of CPS high schools combined.
    • Admission: Highly Selective. An entrance test is required which includes written literature interpretation. There is a review of academic record and attendance as well as an interview with student and parent. An application to the IB Program is also considered to be an application to the HH/AP Program.

  • Double Honors/Advanced Placement Program
    • Students who qualify for this program take classes beyond the honors level in preparation for
Advanced Placement college level classes in Junior and Senior Year. Students are able to select 4 years
of English, History, Science, Math and French, Spanish, German or Arabic. Students do not have to be
in all double honors classes; schedules are developed with consideration for a student's total academic
load. Qualified students from the attendance area and the Performing Arts Program are also scheduled
into HH/AP classes. At least four Advanced Placement courses are required before graduation. LPHS offers
over 15 Advanced Placement classes and has one of the largest Advanced Placement programs in Chicago.
    • Admission: Selective on the basis of scores, academic record and attendance.
  • Performing Arts Program
    • The Drama Program gives students the opportunity to study drama and acting within the context of a college preparatory curriculum. Drama I includes the study of public speaking, oral interpretation
of classical literature, improvisation and the study of classic American plays. Drama II studies history of the theater (both Western and non-Western), acting techniques and schools. Drama III and Drama IV study production, directing and theater management.
    • The Vocal Music and Instrumental (Band and Orchestra) Music Programs reflect a long tradition
of music excellence and achievement within the context of a college preparatory school. The music curriculum is designed to provide the serious music student with the opportunity and challenge of advancing and extending their talents over a fully articulated four year program. In addition music majors are required to take a year of Music Harmony, a year of Music Theory, and participate in school performances. Lincoln Park is ranked as one of the top ten music programs in the State of Illinois.
