Course Electives

MYP Art I-H (for Art Majors)  Grade 9
This foundation course is the prerequisite for all H-elective art courses offered on the Visual Art Major pathway of study. Art II-H (for Art Majors) will provide students an opportunity to create artwork based on their own ideas in addition to assignments given by the art teacher. New artists and concepts will be introduced along with self-generated ideas in sketchbooks showing evidence of moving to a higher level of artistic competence through a variety of art forms. Students will begin to develop a personal style, work with a variety of art forms (both traditional and digital), and begin a path of study toward college-level AP Art Portfolio course experiences during junior and senior year. Admission to the LPHS Visual Art Major Admissions program requires passing a portfolio review process.  Art Majors must maintain an " A or B Average" in their art courses to remain on the 4-year Visual Art Major pathway. 

 

MYP Art I  Grade 9, 10
This foundation course is the prerequisite for all H-elective art courses offered at LPHS
. MYP Art I will introduce students to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and how to apply these fundamentals to Art History and culture, criticism and art-making. All art activities will introduce students to new tools, techniques and forms as a vehicle for self-expression through the visual arts. Important note: Non-honors MYP Art I does not require an audition. A grade of A or B in this class grants automatic approval for future Visual Art H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval. 

 

Studio Drawing & Painting H  Grade 10, 11, 12
This course covers the fundamentals of visual communication through painting and drawing while expanding on foundation skills learned in previous art courses. Students will develop ways of looking and interpreting the visual culture they are exposed to while utilizing art as a creative tool towards self-expression and communication that incorporate IB learner characteristics and ATL skills.  Important note: a grade of A or B grants automatic approval for H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval.

Studio Mixed Media H  Grade 10, 11, 12
This course will explore a variety of mixed-media art forms and techniques that stem from 2D Design, 3D Design, Drawing and Painting methods while expanding on foundation skills learned in previous art courses. Students will create myriad unique artworks to showcase their talents and skills. In this class, students develop a personal style and voice through a variety of visual concepts, methods and techniques that incorporate IB learner characteristics and ATL skills.  Important note: a grade of A or B grants automatic approval for H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval.

 

Studio Sculpture H  Grade 10, 11, 12
This course will explore the fundamentals of Sculpture and the 3-dimensional form while expanding on the foundation skills learned in previous art courses. Students will build a portfolio of artwork that will showcase their development of personal style and voice through a variety of visual concepts, methods, and techniques that incorporate IB learner characteristics and ATL skills.  Important note: a grade of A or B grants automatic approval for H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval.

 

Graphic Design H  Grade 10, 11, 12
This course will cover the fundamentals of Visual Communication through Graphic Art & Design while expanding on the Elements & Principles learned in previous art courses. Students will build a design portfolio using industry standard software to create authentic graphic art and design pieces that will highlight the development of personal style through a variety of visual concepts, methods, and techniques that incorporate IB learner characteristics and ATL skills.  Important note: a grade of A or B grants automatic approval for H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval.

 

Digital Photography H  Grade 10, 11, 12
This course will explore photography and the use of photo editing software as a “digital” darkroom; students will study historical and contemporary photographers, as well as explore how this art form has changed and adapted with the introduction of modern technology. Students will be introduced to the use of digital cameras and industry standard software to create a photography portfolio that incorporate IB learner characteristics and ATL skills. Important note: a grade of A or B grants automatic approval for H-electives (per teacher discretion); a grade of C requires teacher signature/approval.

 

Topics in World Art  Grade 11, 12
This course will provide students the opportunity to engage in the exploration of specific topics in art history & culture. The class will examine a range of information related to eastern or western culture, symbolism or iconography, or social / political movements through art history. Students will participate in art-making, investigation and critical discussion related to course units rooted in historical, contemporary and cultural art forms. Prerequisite: None

 

AP Art & Design Portfolio  Grade 11, 12
In this course students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students submit portfolios for evaluation based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions. Portfolio options include Drawing, 2D Design (digital) or a 3D Design focus. Prerequisite: a grade of A or B in H-elective course and teacher recommendation.

 

IB SL Visual Arts II  Grade 11, 12
IB Art is currently open to CP/DP students and Visual Art Majors. IB Art is an independent journey for each student; sustained media experimentation & planning, investigation & critical analysis and studio & exhibition design will be explored throughout the course. As a ‘community of artists,' immersion in the visual arts is essential to understanding formal, sensory, historical, cultural and conceptual components of the artist in contemporary society. Prerequisite: a grade of A or B in Art I, H-elective and teacher recommendation, or an equivalent art course from a previous school.
